PAXMAN 'SERIES 2'
£990.00
RESERVED
A good Paxman ‘Series 2’ double
horn.
Regarded for many years by teachers and players to be the
finest 'Intermediate' horn ever made, our current one is
quite a robustly-built horn, its ‘Medium’ bell somewhat
heavier than on some later examples.
It plays with a clean and focussed response in all registers,
its high register in particular having a very reassuring
'slotted-in' quality.
Weighing 2.55 kg, the instrument is made of
yellow-brass, although its old original lacquer is quite
patchy, brown and worn in many places. There are a few
cosmetic surface blemishes; however, these slight
imperfections in no way detract from the instrument’s very
good playing qualities.
It must be mentioned, however, that the valves need oiling
quite frequently to minimise 'bearing noise'. If this were my
own horn, I would get the rotors serviced.
Its fibreglass Paxman case is in fairly good condition.
A Paxman cup and PHC gold plated rim are included in the
price.
Distance from finger hook to 4th valve lever: 9.5 cm.
NB: This is an important specification that is often neglected
or overlooked by horn sellers, makers and even some
teachers. The small hands of a young player usually cannot
cope with a left hand stretch that is too wide (although
there is some scope for a brass technician to re-
position either the finger hook, or, less easily, the 4th valve
lever).
I can recommend this excellent, competitively priced
Paxman double horn, (despite my comments on the rotors
needing a service) which 'plays much better than it
looks'!
It is ideal for an ‘improving’ or upgrading player.
NB: Its 4th valve is currently configured as F / Bb but this
can be changed to Bb / F if necessary.
