HAWKES & Son compact shape hand horn conversion with 2 crooks
£495.00
MAKER: HAWKES & Son
MODEL: 'Superior Class',
converted/adapted to a hand horn, from a
Hawkes & Son piston horn whose
valves had worn out beyond affordable repair.
Serial number: 38309
Year of manufacture: 1890-1891
This 'Belgian model' has a very compact shape.
Its smaller 'hoop' (body diameter) than that of the
conventional French type results in the tubing of the
upper circle being double-wound. This can be seen
in the photos.
Original crooks: F (with water key) and
(surprisingly) C basso. This latter crook plays superbly, is
much more free-blowing than most C basso crooks,
has no 'bad notes' (not even the 12th harmonic!) and is
probably worth the price of the horn alone.
The tuning slide is equipped with detachable
extensions, probably because the horn began its life
at the old British high pitch.
The internal taper of the horn's crook receiver is
compatible with old-style Paxman crooks (1982-
1990s) and Webb-Halstead crooks and/or couplers,
although they 'stand out' quite a long way.
This inexpensive hand horn is an ideal 'starter'
model for a pupil beginning the study of the
valveless horn. Extra crooks could be added to it,
one by one, when available.
Available for £95 extra is a medium size coupler
and adaptor which give Eb in combination with the F
crook. Used with the C basso crook, and with the
tuning slide pulled a long way out, (see photos 2
and 3) Bb basso is 'just about possible', but slightly
sharp..nevertheless it's still possible to acquire, with
this set-up, a 'feeling' for the kind of attacks that
need to be practised on a very long tube.
