YAMAHA 668

An excellent Kruspe-style yellow brass full double horn, the
YAMAHA Model YHR-668 embodies all the virtues of a
'medium-large' horn, with more accurate intonation
in the very secure high register than that of
most original Kruspes.
Our current instrument, serial number 002365, is in good
overall condition, with excellent valve compression.
There are just a few very small areas of blemished lacquer,
and some very minor 'cosmetic' dings, having no effect on the
horn's superb playing qualities, which include a
medium-bright sound (which is an interesting contrast to
our other YHR668, which is slightly darker in tone).
The gold brass leadpipe has a conventional water key;
There is a nickel silver Paxman 4B mouthpiece,
currently quite tarnished.
Distance from finger hook to 4th valve lever: 10 cm, very
close to the 'optimum' of 9.5 cm used by many horn makers.
NB: This is a very important specification that is often
neglected or overlooked by horn sellers, makers and even
some teachers. The small hands of a young player usually
cannot cope with a left hand stretch that is too wide
(although there is sometimes some scope for a brass
technician to re-position either the finger hook, or, less
easily, the 4th valve lever).
This lovely horn is very recommendable to a player
looking for a moderately priced instrument
with character, accuracy, personality and a
full, resonant sound.
Its 'sub-£2K' price qualifies it for a parallel
listing in the 'Intermediate' category, although it is
a professional-quality horn.
Weight: 2.2 kg
Case: 'Virtuosi', fairly lightweight, with a shoulder strap.
