PAXMAN, 1960, vintage early Merewether system, with hollow rotors

A beautifully responsive Paxman F/Bb double,
in very good condition, hand-made by Robert
Paxman himself.
This horn is only the 2nd one made according to Dick
Merewether’s new and, of its time, revolutionary ideas on
horn design, he having joined the Paxman company in
1959.
Quite apart from being a notable ‘piece of horn history’,
the instrument plays superbly.
When it was fully overhauled and restored in
2011, its rotors were nickel-plated and hand-lapped;
also, a new Paxman yellow brass leadpipe was installed.
The instrument's light weight (2.25kg) is partly due to the
fact that the rotors are hollow, rather than being machined
from solid brass.
The horn's bell throat is slightly larger than today's
‘Medium’, but not as wide as ‘Large’, giving the
potential for a colourful range of tone colours.
In common with Paxman horns of today, its high register is clear and very well ‘slotted.’
It has a duck's-foot /'flipper', and
a water-key (conventional type) on the leadpipe.
The left 'hand span' (distance from the finger hook to the 4th
valve lever) is 10.5cm.
Since it is quite a rare ‘vintage’ instrument, 64 years old,
its silver plate is worn in a few areas, as can be expected,
but these small blemishes are merely cosmetic.
Nevertheless, this horn has been lovingly
refurbished, to the extent that it still
has many decades of useful playing life in it.
Its 'sub-£2K' price qualifies it for a parallel
listing in the 'Intermediate' category, although it is
a professional-quality horn.
