JOSEF LIDL

F/Bb compensating double or ‘half

double’ formerly called ‘Acustic’ model.

Place of manufacture: Brno, Czech Republic

Bore / throat size: medium.

Alloy: silver plated brass, the plating in excellent,

unworn condition.

Bell flare: fixed

Weight: 2.35kg, quite lightweight.

Case: hard case in much-used but functional

condition.

Further details: this is the well-known, ingeniously

designed (in the 1920s!)  Lidl compensator, with

its centrally placed horizontal 4th valve rotor, and

its rather 'visually bewildering' cluster of tuning

slides, none of which seem to belong to the rotor

beneath which it is situated!

This formerly very good horn is now in

generally poor shape acoustically, with very

low valve compression.  It plays well only

when its rotors are oiled with medium

viscosity (quite thick) 'bearing' oil, which of

course slows down the speed of the valves.

Several brass technicians have reported that

it would be impractical, if not impossible, to

nickel-plate and lap-in the woefully leaky

large horizontal change rotor, because of the

layout of the tubes in and out of the valve.

Replacing the 4th valve is not an option,

because this Lidl model was discontinued

many years ago.

Therefore, this horn is being sold only for

spare parts.
