Maker:  C. G. CONN

Model:  C.F. SCHMIDT COPY (marketed as '6D' in the

1920s)

Type:  F/Bb full double with piston 4th valve

Bell throat: M

Alloy: unlacquered yellow brass.

Bell flare: fixed

Date: 1924-1925

Weight: 2.24 kg, very light for a double horn.

Visual condition:  good, ‘has seen some use’.   There are 2 small, neatly made brass patches measuring 3 x 1cm and 4.5 x 1.5cm, on the first branch, both of them visible in the photos; also 3 much smaller nickel silver patches. These strengthen the brass in some vulnerable places.

Valve compression: very good in the 3 rotary valves, which

were nickel plated about 10 years ago; good in the piston

valve.

Water key: conventional type, on the leadpipe.

Case: fibreglass, good condition

Further details: the horn is fitted with a 'duck's-foot',

which will help many hand sizes to reach the thumb / piston

change valve in a reasonably comfortable way.

This piston 4th valve makes slurring from the F to the Bb side

really fluent, as it did on the historic C.F. Schmidt design, of

which this horn is a copy.

A lovely, characterful instrument that is not only a

piece of horn history, nearly 100 years old, but plays

beautifully.
