Appearance, ‘cosmetics’: good condition; there are a few very minor dings, mostly on the detachable bell flare. The lacquer is 97% unblemished, with some slight wear on the leadpipe and a couple of scratches measuring 2cm and 3cm in length on the outer bell flare.
The flare (diameter 29.5 cm, weight 315 gm) screws fully home, meeting up with the inner throat on the inside, although externally the top part of the thread is visible. The flare, evidently hand-made, has a traditional seamed gusset, quite small and narrow,(12 cm x 2 cm).
The mechanical valve linkages are operated by German /
Austrian-style finger buttons with clock springs.
There is an engraving of a bird on the outer bell throat, and
the words 'DIPLOMA MODEL'. Below it is the engraving
'Paxman Bros

The case, with backpack straps, is by Paxman/Marcus
Bonna.
It has a rigid outer frame, a carbon fibre bell protector, and a
soft upper part that expands, via a zipper, to accommodate
a larger and deeper horn.
General comments: a fine player with a sweet, clear sound.
In common with most single F altos, it shows its best
qualities in the upper-middle to high register, rather than over
its entire range.
Probably dating from the mid-to-late 1950s, this very
lightweight little horn could be used to good effect in
e.g. Bach's 1st Brandenburg Concerto or Handel's 'Concerti a
Due Cori', as well as in many of Haydn's 'Sturm und Drang' and
earlier symphonies that feature high horns.
