F/Bb/A(+)/E(+)

Serial no: 2759

a Conn 8D/28D). The entire bell (the flare, and

its tail/throat) was replaced in 2014, and

the horn re-lacquered.

Alloy: lacquered yellow brass

Detachable bell flare.

Valve compression: very good

Visual/cosmetic condition: generally very good;

there is some lacquer wear in the usual, expected

places.

(and Don Maslet tunable mute).

The horn comes with several mouthpieces, a Don

Maslet mute and various oils etc.

Further details:although 49 years old, this

horn has been well-maintained, and is a

superb player in all registers.

Its 5th valve is, of course, very useful, not

only for hand stopping without the

inconvenience of transposing, but also for

some very good (but unorthodox) alternative

high register fingerings.

Although I loved the 'A' bell (as well as the X bell,

similar but fatter in the 'neck' than the A bell) when

it was developed and launched in the 1990s, players

with small hands found that hand stopping was

difficult, resulting in some sharpness.

The Model 21A's built-in advantage is that the

5th valve's tuning slides can be adjusted to

correct this potential sharpness of pitch.

NB: it must be mentioned that the only reason

why this superbly-playing horn is priced so

reasonably is that there is a depressed part

of the upper bell 'neck' comprising the nickel

silver handguard area. This has absolutely no

effect on the horn's playing!

It could, in fact, be repaired  by a brass

technician but the handguard would need to be

removed, and this would probably cause the

lacquer to be damaged.  My advice to the

horn's owner was to leave it 'as is', but with a

lower price reflecting this purely visual

blemish.
