Maker:  Herbert Fritz KNOPF,

Markneukirchen, GDR (the former East

Germany).

Type:  F/Bb double

Bell throat profile: medium

Alloy: lacquered yellow brass

Bell flare: fixed

Visual/cosmetic condition: lacquer worn in the usual,

expected places; there are a few dings and

blemishes: these can be seen in photos #1 and #5.

Original case in scruffy but functional condition.

Further details: a characterful H.F. Knopf horn, probably

dating from the 1940s-1950s, when nearly all high

quality brass instruments were hand-made by a single

'master craftsman'. Weighing only 2.44kg, it comes with

an alternative main tuning slide with a central manual

rotary change valve with its own tuning slide for either

'A' or 'A+' (stopping).

There are 2 old original mouthpieces, by

Knopf and Besson.

The horn plays beautifully over the entire range, with a

warm but clear sound and a very good high

register.

It has been in its case, unplayed, for over 40 years,

and is currently housed with its owner in Enfield,

North London. Contact details can be supplied on

request.

Its 'sub-£2K' price qualifies it for a parallel

listing in the 'Intermediate' category, although it is

a professional-quality horn.
