MODEL:  Class A 'Excelsior Sonorous', 

 

converted/adapted from a

 

Hawkes & Son  piston  horn whose 

 

valves had worn out beyond

 

affordable repair.

 

Serial number: 60138

 

 

Year of manufacture: 1928-1929   

 

        •   WEBB/HALSTEAD  crooks for F, Bb and C alto;

       PAXMAN  Eb crook.

       

       These four 'master crooks' can be seen, with           

        the horn body, in photo 3.

 

          •  FOUR  numbered couplers by Nicholas Perry:

 

     1) very small; 2) small 3) medium 4) double

 

•   The crooks and couplers used either singly or in

combination will give the following keys:

 

C alto; B alto; Bb alto; A alto; Ab alto; G; F#; F;

E; Eb; D; C basso; B basso; Bb basso.


 

•   The upper tuning slide's outer receiver is

removable, so can be replaced by a sauterelle

(a piston valve set, not supplied) in order to use the

instrument as a French-style valve horn.

      •   The internal taper of the horn's crook receiver is

compatible with old-style Paxman crooks (1982-

1990s) and Webb-Halstead crooks and/or couplers.
