Maker: CONN

Model: 28D (post Elkhart)

Serial number: GD940107

Type: Full double in F/Bb

Alloy: lacquered yellow brass

Bell flare: fixed

Visual / cosmetic condition: good, with some lacquer

wear in the expected places. There is some

marbling on the 1st valve's tuning slide, whose

brace needs re-soldering; a very straightforward and

inexpensive job for a brass technician.

Water key: conventional type, on the leadpipe.

Original hard case.

More details:  The Conn 28D is much rarer than

the 'iconic' 8D. Its yellow brass construction gives

it a warmer sonority than the nickel silver 8D.

Our current example is a very good ‘post Elkhart’

28D, very free-blowing and generally responsive,

with a nicely secure and 'slotted' high

register.

It has a distinguished pedigree, having been

played in the LSO by Jonathan Lipton, its

previous owner.   It displays all the

Conn virtues: a potentially huge sound,

a wide dynamic range and

superb legato.

Although a 'professional quality' instrument,

it is also listed in the 'intermediate' category,

owing to its 'below £2000' price.

NB: THE HORN IS CURRENTLY WITH ITS OWNER

IN NORTH ESSEX, about 10 minutes from

Stansted Airport, UK.
