KRUSPE COMPENSATING DOUBLE, nickel silver
£1,695.00
Maker: ED. KRUSPE
Type: F/Bb compensating double
Bell throat profile: Medium-Large
Alloy: nickel silver
Valve compression: very good
Visual/cosmetic condition: generally very good.
Further details: a lovely, lightweight horn dating from the
era when all high quality brass instruments were hand-
made by a single 'master craftsman'.
Distance from finger hook to 4th valve lever: 9.5 cm.
NB: This is an important specification that is often neglected
or overlooked by horn sellers, makers and even some
teachers. The small hands of a young player usually cannot
cope with a left hand stretch that is too wide (although
there is some scope for a brass technician to re-
position either the finger hook, or, less easily, the 4th valve
lever).
A very good player with a clear, well-defined high
register, slightly more free-blowing on the F side than
on many compensators; this means that it can be used on
a low part almost as effectively as a full double.
Optionally available for £80 is an original Kruspe brass
alternative main tuning slide (a perfect fit with this
horn) that lowers the Bb horn to A,
(requiring the F slide to be pulled out about 2-3 cm
further than the closed position). The 'A' slide can be
seen in photo #2.
Works such as Spohr's Octet in E,
Beethoven's "Abscheulicher" (Fidelio) aria and Weber's
Concertino in E are much easier to play on a horn in
E/A!
A 'memorable piece of horn history', this is a
practical, usable, characterful example, with a lot of
life left in it.
One of its very striking features is that it is
astonishingly light in weight: 2.1 kg.
Its 'sub-£2K' price qualifies it for a parallel
listing in the 'Intermediate' category, although it is
a professional-quality horn.
Its bell flare threads are quite fragile, so I recommend that it
be kept in a fixed bell case ( included).
