This elegant, refined and mellow-sounding

vintage Alexander compensator with detachable

bell flare is perhaps a pre-WW2 instrument,

lovingly preserved.

Attractively lightweight, made of unlacquered yellow

brass, it weighs only 2.1 kg, probably due to its

hollow rotors. Also, the bell flare is extraordinarily

light, at 9.5oz / 269 gm (and rather fragile: there is

a small slightly dented area about 2 cm across,

where the brass is thinnest).

Although it feels comfortably compact in the playing

position, enhanced by an adjustable duck's foot,

its owner has recently suggested that

the position of the 4th valve lever might be slightly

awkward for a player with small hands.

As can be seen in the photos, the instrument has

had a full life; nevertheless, it still plays beautifully.

Although a professional-quality horn, it is also

listed in the Intermediate category because

of its modest price.
