MAKER:  HAWKES & Son

A hand horn converted from a Hawkes & Son

piston horn whose valves had worn

out beyond affordable repair.

Serial number: 10450

Year of manufacture: pre-1895

Stamped on the outer bell throat:

PETRIE & SON

AGENTS

CAPETOWN

and on the bell garland:

R A BAND

PTH 1

2 crooks: F, vintage, possibly Boosey, bearing a

                silver plate stamped 'F';

                Eb, modern, lacquered yellow brass.

           •   The internal taper of the horn's receiver

is compatible with Paxman crooks from 1982 to the

1990s,  and Webb-Halstead crooks and couplers,

1988-2014.

This is a useful, inexpensive 'starter' hand

horn.  Its appearance is quite startling: what looks

like tarnish is almost impossible to polish off; it is a

very hard, glossy brown 'patina' that acts almost

like a baked-on lacquer.  There are 2 patches on the

outer bell flare, one on the horn body in the left

hand area, and 2 on the inner bell flare.  The tuning

slide has been patched recently, to remedy a leak.

The horn plays with a very direct tonal focus and

is fairly tight-blowing, especially on the Eb crook.
