A very good 19th century Trompe de
Chasse in D, with original mouthpiece, by
EMILE MENNESON
RUE des TAPISSIERS 10, REIMS
In the 'New Langwill', only one horn by
Menneson is reported. Emile Mennesson was at rue des
Tapissiers 10, Reims in 1879 and 1893, but at rue des Tapissiers
12 in 1872, indicating that the trompe is post-1872.
Our current example has a clear and clean 12th
harmonic (G) without a burr or 'roll', when played
using its original brass unplated mouthpiece.
This mouthpiece, its rim rather flat, not as narrow and
sharp as most traditional ones, is in 'much used' condition
and the brass is rather tarnished, but its narrow bore and
V-sided internal profile gives a clear, bright and
penetrating 'trompe sound'. Furthermore, harmonics 13-
16 are well defined and slotted', with an relatively easily
sounded 'top C'.
At present, the trompe has the appearance of being
constructed from 2 different types of alloy (yellow brass and
gold brass), but this may be simply due to the dulling and
'browning' of yellow brass.
Its (modern) case, in good condition, is made of black
plastic and fibre.
Due to the large size of its case, it is not possible to
ship or deliver this horn by courier. Personal collection
would be ideal, but personal delivery might be possible,
depending on geography and mileage.
