This excellent lacquered yellow brass

HOLTON H-378 medium-bore horn is almost  identical

to the more expensive H-178 professional model,

although it is very slightly heavier.

 An 'almost iconic' long-tried-and-tested horn,

regarded by many teachers as the 'industry

standard intermediate horn', it is still in production, so

spare parts are always available.

Weighing only 2.59 kg, it is not quite

as heavy as some Intermediate full double horns.

Distance from finger hook to 4th valve lever is 9.5cm:

the 'theoretical ideal' for the average size hand.

NB: This is a very important specification that is often neglected

or overlooked by horn sellers, makers and even some teachers.

The small hands of a young player usually cannot cope

with a left hand stretch that is too wide (although there is

sometimes some scope for a brass technician to re-position

either the finger hook, or, less easily, the 4th valve lever).

It has a ingenious water key ('Saturn' type, which can be

opened by pressing its 'ring' from any angle), on

the leadpipe.

The vintage Paxman fibreglass case is in good, if much-

used condition.

A brand new and very protective lightweight case with

backpack straps is available for £90.

It is an ideal choice for a young player upgrading from

'mini' or a compensator, since it plays with an

even, consistent response and a clear, ringing

sound over the whole range. 'Cosmetically' it is in very

good condition, with just a few tiny dings, and only about 2%

of the lacquer showing any blemishes.
