'Maker': F.BUISSON, Milan

Type:  F/Bb compensating double.

'F. Buisson' is a 'stencil' name; the horn was

probably made by Kalison, Orsi or

Rampone & Cazzani.

Fictitious maker's names, found variously on

similar models, include: Alliance, Ambassador,

Anborg,Getzen, John Grey and Viking; there may be

others.

The general design of this model of

compensating double horn,

dating back at least 65 years,  usually incorporates a

4th or 'change' F-Bb valve that is notorious in its lever's

inconvenient placing for 'small to medium' sized hands.

However, this horn's 4th valve has been

ingeniously customised, with the tubing re-

designed so as to facilitate the  thumb

valve's much easier operation.

Bore / Throat: medium

Alloy:  lacquered yellow-brass

Bell flare:  fixed

Lacquer: 95% OK

Valve compression: good

Visual / cosmetic condition: good. The horn ‘has seen

some use’ (a few very small surface dings) but

generally it is in good but not outstanding' condition.

This is reflected in its very reasonable price.

Weight: 2.6 kg

Mouthpiece: very good, silver-plated, in as-new

condition.

Case: much-used but still functional black hard case.

Further details: A good beginner instrument; a logical upgrade from a ‘mini' or ‘kinder horn’; an ‘improver’ horn for a player up to about Grades 5-6. Its weight makes it more suitable for a larger-than-average young student.  An attractive visual feature is the elaborate floral engraving on the bell.  Its rather short valve levers have been fitted with rubber extension pads, which can be removed and the price reduced by £15 if not required.

A solidly-built and fairly heavy horn, it plays with a full,

centred tone and a clear high register.
