Maker: F. E. OLDS & SON

Fullerton, USA

Bell throat profile: medium-large

Serial number:  596758, manufactured 1966-1967.

Alloy: unlacquered yellow brass, including the tuning slide inner legs. Only the slide 'outers', the connecting ferrules and the replacement Conn Elkhart 8D leadpipe are nickel silver.

Valve compression: good

Visual  condition: 'has seen much use'. There are a few 'non-invasive' dings and blemishes, but these are purely cosmetic issues with no apparent effect on the playing of the horn. There is visual evidence of repairs in several places.

General: this is ergonomically quite a big horn that would be best suited to a player with a larger-than-average hand span.

Its medium-large bell throat is similar to e.g. Holton 179, Paxman 'L' or 'E', or Finke 63;  its high register is clear and focussed.

Weight: 2.5 kg

Regarding its overall condition compared to its playing qualities, this interesting vintage USA-made horn falls into the category that I call 'sleeper'(!): a horn that plays beautifully despite its being rather 'cosmetically challenged'.

Its 'sub-£2K' price qualifies it for a parallel

listing in the 'Intermediate' category, although it is

professional-quality horn.
