  A natural/hand horn converted from a late

whose valves had become worn

out beyond affordable repair.

Serial number: 43414

Year of manufacture: pre-1900

Stamped on the outer bell throat:

There are  2 crooks: F (original)  and Eb (modern) plus a

small extension to flatten the pitch slightly.

Optionally available ( price £130) is a Webb double

coupler, giving C basso or Bb basso with the F and Eb

crooks respectively. This coupler can be seen in photos

2 and 3.

The internal taper of the horn's receiver

is compatible with Paxman crooks from 1982 to the

1990s,  and Webb-Halstead crooks and couplers,

1988-2014.

This is a  very useful, inexpensive 'starter' hand

horn.  It plays at pitches from A 443 to A 440,

with a very direct tonal focus.

It is moderately tight-blowing across the range with the

F crook, and slightly more free-blowing (strangely) with

the modern repro Eb crook, but its French-style bell

taper gives a good sonority especially on the partially-

stopped notes.

Both crooks have good 12th (G) and achievable

(if  tight)  16th (C) harmonics.
