Maker: ED. KRUSPE

'Modell Gumpert Kruspe', c. 1912

Type:  F/Bb compensating double

Bell throat profile: Medium-Large

Alloy: unlacquered yellow brass

Bell flare: fixed

Valve compression: very good

Visual/cosmetic condition: generally good.

Further details: a lovely, lightweight horn dating from the era when all high quality brass instruments were hand-made by a single 'master craftsman'. This 'Gumpert-Kruspe' model's configuration dates from about 1906, and incorporates the 2-part Bb 3rd slide and the original Kruspe type of F horn loop, with its downward-pointing tuning slide.

An excellent player with a clear and 'notchy' high register, slightly more free-blowing on the F side than on many compensators. This means that it can be used on a low part almost as effectively as a full double.

Although a 'memorable piece of horn history', it is a practical, usable, characterful example, with a lot of life left in it!

Its 'sub-£2K' price qualifies it for a parallel

listing in the 'Intermediate' category, although it is

a professional-quality horn.

A remarkably similar horn in the R.J. Martz collection (USA) can be seen here:
