BOOSEY & HAWKES / JOSEF LIDL

Model 400

Type: F/Bb ‘half double’ (compensating double)

Bell throat profile: medium.

Alloy: lacquered yellow brass

Bell flare: fixed

Lacquer: slightly worn in only the expected places.

Valve compression: good

Visual/ cosmetic condition: generally OK, with just a few

very minor dings that have no effect on the horn’s

playability.

Weight: 2.35 kg

Original hard case in 'much-used' but perfectly functional

condition.

Holton-Farkas model silver plated mouthpiece in good

condition.

Further details: although not a ‘mini-horn’, the Boosey

& Hawkes 400 compensator has a more compact shape

than the rarely-available Paxman Studenti compensator,

weighs about the same, and is a good, relatively

inexpensive upgrade from a mini-horn or a single F.

Its rather small-bore central tubing (11.7mm)

helps a young improving player to produce

a round, centred tone.
