Further details: A very good ‘post Elkhart’ 8D, excellent in all

its playing qualities. It displays all the traditional Conn

virtues:  big sound; wide dynamic range and a lovely

legato.  As can be seen in the photos, USA dimes have

been added to the rather short valve levers, to help players

with small fingers, but, paradoxically, the coins raise the

height of the levers!  This can be adjusted via the strings, of

course.  Alternatively, removal of the coins by a

repair-person is a relatively simple procedure.

Distance from finger hook to 4th valve lever: 11.1 cm.

NB: This is an important specification that is often neglected

or overlooked by horn sellers, makers and even some

teachers. The small hands of a young player usually cannot

cope with a left hand stretch that is too wide (although

there is some scope for a brass technician to re-

position either the finger hook, or, less easily, the 4th valve

lever).

Although a professional-quality horn, it is also listed in the

Intermediate category because of its sub-£2K price.
