Maker: BOOSEY & HAWKES

Model: ‘SOTONE no.1

Type: French-style piston horn with F and Eb crooks.

(Eb crook not shown in the photos)

Bell throat profile: Small

Alloy: brass

Visual / cosmetic condition: generally, fairly good; there are several small dings on the horn body and one slight flat depression on the bell ‘tail’, but nothing that impairs the horn’s fine playing qualities. The crook shows signs of much use: dings and a small nickel silver patch.

The overall appearance of the instrument could undoubtedly be improved by use of a good, not too abrasive metal polish.

Valve compression: good; the slides are tight, showing hardly any wear; they are short enough that, when pushed fully in, the horn could be played with an ‘A’ crook (not supplied).

Case:  none, but there are some suitable, very modestly priced cases available.

Further details:  although not exactly ‘visually attractive’ at present, the horn plays very well, and is rather light in weight (1.85 kg) compared to some similar piston horns.  It exhibits the often-encountered ‘acute angle’ between crook and horn body, dictating that it needs to be held up almost horizontally, in the Dennis Brain / Ifor James fashion.
