£1,890.00

This is the final one of three W. Brown & Sons French horns from a private collection which is  being dispersed.

Specifications:

3 Périnet valves as a detachable sauterelle with 11.2 mm central bore.

Crooks: F, silver plated, by Brown;

Bb alto, A, Ab, G, E, Eb, D, C basso,

a matching set by Couesnon, Paris.

Bb basso (in combination with the C basso crook)

single coil coupler by Nicholas Perry (1990s).

2 tubes to replace the  sauterelle for hand horn playing.

1 crook extension, to lower the pitch to A430 (not seen in the photos).

2 original mouthpieces, both with wider rims than many typical examples of the period:

Couesnon, brass with nickel silver rim, O.D 27.12 mm, I.D 17mm; total length of the piece: 72.7 mm; bore approx 4.4 mm.

The shank fits perfectly into the Couesnon crooks to a venturi depth of 28+ mm. This mouthpiece gives exceptionally clear 12th harmonics (written 'G') without the imperfect attack ('roll') that is often found when using a modern thick-shanked mouthpiece that doesn't fit deeply enough into the crook receiver.

Besson: silver plated brass, rim O.D: 26.85 mm, I.D. 16.8 mm; total length of the piece: 63.3 mm; bore approx 4.5 mm. This slightly smaller mouthpiece plays beautifully with the high crooks, enabling the 16th harmonic ('top C') to be sounded on the G, Ab and A crooks as well as (with a lot of effort!) on the Bb alto crook.

Inscribed on the garland:

W. BROWN & SONS, MAKERS. 323 KENNINGTON ROAD. LONDON No 1004

Pitch: A 436-438 (the 4 high crooks); A 438-440 (the middle and lower crooks).

Pedigree: the horn was played by the late Peter Civil, and can be heard on some early (1970s) recordings of e.g. The Academy of Ancient Music and the English Concert.

Case: original (heavy!) wooden box with felt-covered slots for the crooks.

NB The horn may not be available for international shipping, due to its size and weight.
