YAMAHA 666N
£1,350.00
Maker: YAMAHA
Model: YHR-666N
Type: F/Bb full double
Bell throat profile: ML (medium-large)
Alloy: nickel silver
Bell flare: fixed
Weight: 2.45 kg
Distance from finger hook to 4th valve lever: 11 cm.
NB: This is an important specification that is often neglected
or overlooked by horn sellers, makers and even some
teachers. The small hands of a young player usually cannot
cope with a left hand stretch that is too wide (although
there is some scope for a brass technician to re-
position either the finger hook, or, less easily, the 4th valve
lever).
Visual/cosmetic condition: 'has seen much use'; this
description applies mainly to the lacquer, which is very worn
or missing in several places. There is one patch, near the
thumb valve lever, and there are some small,
inconsequential dings, but no blemishes that have any
effect on the playing.
Valve compression: excellent
Mouthpiece: PHC with gold-plated rim.
Case: Yamaha original, very protective, in good condition.
Further details: very free-blowing and generally 'easy to
play', with a crisply defined high register, the Yamaha 666
is considered by many players to be a superior horn to
its successors, the 668 and 668-2.
Although a professional-quality instrument, its very
reasonable price accounts for its parallel listing in the
'Intermediate' category.
The low price is due to its 'cosmetic' condition,
rather than due any mechanical or acoustical shortcomings.
Its owner reports that it was fully serviced very recently.
Overall, an excellent player with an even
response over the entire range.
