BOOSEY & CO 'Sotone' piston horn

Maker: BOOSEY & CO

Model: ‘SOTONE’

Type: French-style piston horn with F crook.

Serial number: 118600

Bell throat profile: Small

Alloy: silver plated brass

Visual / cosmetic condition: the silver plate is maybe 60% intact, generally quite worn, with the brass showing through in several places.  There are several small dings on the horn body and the crook, and one depression on the front of the upper part of the bell throat (the ‘spout’) but nothing that impairs the horn’s very good playing qualities.

Valve compression: good

Mouthpiece: original Boosey & Co silver plated ‘59’

Case:  none, but there are some suitable, very modestly priced cases available.

Further details:  although quite ‘cosmetically challenged’ (!) this is perhaps the sweetest-playing of a recent influx of several vintage French-style horns that are not yet on the website while I am playing and evaluating them.

This fairly lightweight horn (2 kg) exhibits the often-encountered ‘acute angle’ between crook and horn body, dictating that it needs to be held up almost horizontally, in the Dennis Brain / Ifor James fashion.
