A lovely 1960s ALEXANDER yellow brass

5-valve 'alto' compensating horn in

Bb/A+/high F.

This very characterful horn has an excellent pedigree,

having been played professionally for many years in the

English National Opera/Sadlers Wells orchestra.

It is a beautifully responsive ‘descant’ instrument with a

particularly clear and ringing sound; ideal for those

tricky Bach Cantatas and middle-period Haydn ‘C’

and ‘Bb’ alto symphonies!

The Bb side is so very secure and ‘slotted’ that the F

alto seems almost a ‘redundant luxury’. Even though

the F horn's length is shorter than that of the Bb side,

one of its secondary functions, apart from its clarity in

the high register, is to extend the low range far beyond

what is possible on a Bb/A+ single horn.

The lacquer is in surprisingly pristine condition, with no

wear at all; my guess is that the horn was re-lacquered

fairly recently.

There are two minor dings, merely visual

blemishes with no effect on the instrument's fine

playing qualities, which are undoubtedly

enhanced by the excellent compression of the

rotors.

The original 1960s Alexander 'moc-croc' screw-

bell suitcase is in much-used but fully useable

condition; included are a rather shabby but functional

Steve Lewis tuneable mute and two nickel silver

mouthpieces in fair condition, ultrasonically cleaned

very recently.

Price comparison: one of the USA's leading retailers of

used horns is currently selling a similar but slightly

newer (1970s) unlacquered horn for $4,250 (£3,150).
